SUMMARY:Missions\, Maps & Mediators. Influential Encounters between Jesuits and Native Americans
DESCRIPTION:In the seventeenth century\, the Church made immense efforts to spread the one\, true\, Catholic faith everywhere. The discovery of new territories and peoples spurred them\, even more\, to set up missions in all directions to win souls. Beneficially if they could\, maliciously if they had to. Because in order to save as many individuals as possible\, it was necessary to impose the Catholic faith if necessary. This modus operandi largely determined relationships and power relations and has far-reaching consequences to this day. \n\n\n\nThanks to their incomparable and wide network of mission stations\, the Jesuits left a very large mark on Catholic missionary history. Moreover\, they kept accurate records of them and also made many maps of the newly discovered territories. Those documents offer an unprecedented insight into their ways. The letters and maps were expressions of colonial expansion but were also the result of transcultural communication. During a lecture evening with a concluding panel discussion led by Christiane Stallaert entitled ‘Missions\, Maps and Mediators. Influential Encounters between Jesuits and Native Americas’\, Mirela Altic and Francismar Alex Lopes de Carvalho delve deeper into this history. Professor Altic reflects on the incorporation of indigenous knowledge into Jesuit maps\, while Professor Carvalho shows how local elements were also incorporated to spread the Catholic faith. \n\n\n\nThis lecture is part of the Big Questions series on social issues of the past and present.

SUMMARY:ArtWork Symposium
DESCRIPTION:The Young Academy is putting the career of the young artist at the centre of ‘Search-Stadion’ with the debate series ArtWork: Conversations about Care for Artists’ Careers. \n\n\n\n\n\nIn the early stages of their trajectories\, young artists are confronted with different players from art education and the professional field that have an influence on their further development and the career path they will take. These gatekeepers can vary greatly per art discipline\, but they always play a major role in forming the artistic identity of the young artist on the one hand and a sustainable artistic career on the other. \n\n\n\nPreviously we organized three debates with a group of gatekeepers in the fields of Mixed Media & Film\, Performing Arts\, and Visual Arts and investigated how all these players influence the pathway from art student to full-fledged artist. \n\n\n\nThis symposium brings together insights from the art disciplines and make an overarching state of affairs. SUMMARY:ArtWork / The Young Academy in Search-Stadion
DESCRIPTION:ArtWork: Conversations about Care for Artists’ Careers\n\n\n\nIn the early stages of their trajectories\, young artists are confronted with different players from art education and the professional field that have an influence on their further development and the career path they will take. These gatekeepers can vary greatly per art discipline\, but they always play a major role in forming the artistic identity of the young artist on the one hand and a sustainable artistic career on the other. \n\n\n\nTherefore\, in the framework of the city festival for tradition and renewal\, Baroque Influencers\, the Young Academy (Jonge Academie) and the Antwerp Port House (Havenhuis) are organizing a series of debates that question the care for our new generations of artists. Together with gatekeepers from the arts sector\, art schools (from students to policy makers) and other stakeholders in Flanders\, these debates seek layered answers to the question of how aspiring artists develop into full-fledged sustainable players in the field. The goal of this project is to uncover not only the differences\, but more importantly the similarities between these players in order to come up with an overview of best practices that we can use to send young artists into the field. How can the different art fields reinforce each other? We particularly focus on the role of art schools in higher education: how do they deal with the growing market and how can the market treat the training programs respectfully? How do art schools in our country do care and aftercare for aspiring artists? \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOn three Wednesdays in October 2023\, we will bring together a group of the aforementioned gatekeepers from one cluster of arts disciplines and debate how all of these players impact the trajectory from art student to full-fledged artist. Every Wednesday afternoon we hold a live exhibition within which we meet and engage in this conversation. This encounter is documented through video recording and editing\, transcription\, audio clips\, photographic recordings and drawings. These remains testify to our live moments and are added to weekly. In this way\, the exhibition grows organically during the month of October. Although numerous art disciplines are recognized in Flanders and there are many overlaps\, for practical reasons we chose to divide the art field into three clusters: Mixed Media and Film; Performing Arts and Music; Visual Arts and Art in Public Space. Within each cluster we will work on the same questions\, so that at the end of the month we can foresee a final moment where we bring these different fields together to arrive at an overarching state of affairs. \n\n\n\n\n\nOn Wednesday afternoons\, we fill the installation ‘Zoekstadion’ (‘Searching Stadium’ ) with people who want to engage in a conversation about career starters in the specific artistic fields they work in\, as artists themselves or as facilitators. Visitors can sit down among the speakers and listen or participate. Or they can walk through the installation as they listen to the live discussions. Meanwhile\, filmmaker Ayham Qomoq will capture the discussions from various viewpoints within the installation\, a graphic designer will visualize the discussions through drawings on the walls of the installation\, a simultaneous translator program will transcribe the discussions on screen\, and each speaker will bring an object they deem relevant to the theme and which will be added to the installation\, and as such the installation will grow after each Wednesday. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nArtWork Events\n\n\n\nFriday 7 October 2023Internal opening reception  \n\n\n\nWednesday 11 October 2023 14:00 – 17:00Mixed Media & Film Host:  Christina Stuhlberger | Co-Host: Sander De RidderSpeakers: Eva Van Tongeren\, Vincent Stroep\, Pascal Vandelanoitte\, Ben de Raes\, Nikol Wellens\, among others. \n\n\n\nWednesday 18 October 2023: 14:00 – 17:00 (in collaboration with Articulate)Performing Arts (Spoken Word\, Drama\, Dance and Music)Host: Kevin Trappeniers en Annelies Van Assche  | Co-Host: Kurt Bertels en Zoë GyselinckSpeakers: Tuur Marinus\, Karen Joosten\, Mokhallad Rasem\, Nikol Wellens\, Amina Iddrisu\, among others. \n\n\n\nThursday 19 October 2023Internal JA-Day on location at the Antwerp Port House \n\n\n\nWednesday 25 October 2023 14:00 – 17:00 (in collaboration with Articulate)Visual Arts and Art in Public SpaceHost: Nicolas Baeyens + Lodewijk Heylen | Co-Host: Kevin TrappeniersSpeakers: Sergio Servellón\, Stella Lohaus\, Laurence Petrone\, Maarten Inghels\, Bart Vanderbiesen\, Vedran Kopljar\, Nikol Wellens\, among others. \n\n\n\nFriday 27 October 2023 15:00 – 18:00 Wrap-up SymposiumHosts: Nicolas + Annelies\, hosts of the Working GroupGuest speakers: to be confirmed. \n\n\n\nFollow Search-Stadion on Instagram or Facebook:@zoekstadion #zoekstadion \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPractical details\n\n\n\nArtWork runs from 6 to 31 October at Search-Stadion in the Port House in Antwerp. SUMMARY:The Belief in the Joke: Humour and the Religious Other
DESCRIPTION:Western Europe of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries was deeply religious and characterized by a lively culture of humour. How did these two characteristics go together? Professor Lieke Stelling (Utrecht University) uses examples to discuss high-profile cases in which humour and faith met. She draws on her own specialty: English cultural history and literature. She examines the ways in which humour is\, in fact\, an indispensable part of religion. \n\n\n\nThis talk (in Dutch) is part of our lecture series on the big questions in society. \n\n\n\nRead more about this event in Dutch. \n\n\n\nThis is lecture is part of the series The Big Questions on the social issues then and now. SUMMARY:How dangerous is the faith of the other?
DESCRIPTION:Historian Judith Pollmann (Leiden University) will talk about faith persecution\, polarization and tolerance in Antwerp between 1500 and 1700. (in Dutch) \n\n\n\nIn the sixteenth century\, Christians in Europe\, and thus also in Antwerp\, wrestled with the question: ‘what to do with dissenters from their own circles?’ Was it a matter of eradicating ‘heresy’ through criminal law and on the battlefield? Or did the ‘conscience’ not allow itself to be forced\, but only to be convinced? Shouldn’t city administrators be managing things better to ‘keep it all together’? And wouldn’t it be better to look for a form of tolerance and ‘forbearance’ – an emergency solution to the division\, waiting for the moment when theologians would agree again? \n\n\n\nIn the Netherlands\, this discussion led to a revolt against Habsburg authority and a civil war that divided the Dutch to the core. It led to the permanent schism between the regions\, and the departure of tens of thousands of Antwerp citizens from their city\, often to the new Protestant Republic. After 1585\, the city then became a testing ground for a whole new baroque and militant Catholicism. Especially under the leadership of the Jesuits\, people experimented with new ways of arming the faithful against heretical ideas and mobilizing them to fight the Protestant enemy. But behind the scenes it sometimes proved more practical to tolerate than to persecute\, and Antwerp’s reality resembled that of its Protestant neighbors much more than it appeared at first sight. \n\n\n\nJudith Pollmann is professor of early modern Dutch history at Leiden University. She has published widely on religion\, violence and politics in the early modern Low Countries\, most recently with Raymond Fagel\, 1572. Civil War in the Netherlands (2022) and with Marnix Beyen and Henk te Velde\, The Low Countries. A History for Today (2021). She is a foreign member of the Royal Flemish Academy of Belgium for Sciences and Arts. \n\n\n\nThis is lecture is part of the series The Big Questions on the social issues then and now. Read more …

SUMMARY:Why shopping for our spirituality in all corners of the world can be a problem
DESCRIPTION:In this talk Liz Bucar uses the framework of appropriation to unpack the ethics of yoga. What does it mean to insist yoga is a spiritual but not religious practice? Are we entitled to borrow any practice in the pursuit of our personal health? What forms of structural injustice does the popularity of yoga depend on and reinforce? A leading scholar of religious ethics\, Bucar draws on her own experience becoming a certified Kripalu yoga instructor to explore the moral risks of intercultural borrowing. She argues that when we ignore the core religious beliefs of the faithful and commodify their practices\, we risk further marginalizing minority groups and reinforcing social inequities. \n\n\n\nLiz Bucar is an award-winning author and professor of religion at Northeastern University in the USA. In her latest book\, Stealing My Religion\, she unpacks the ethical dilemmas of a messy form of cultural appropriation—religious appropriation—asking what the implications are for borrowing the religion of others. As Bucar continually tests the limits of borrowing dress\, doctrines\, and rituals from Christianity\, Islam\, and Hinduism\, occasionally reflecting on her own missteps\, she comes to a surprising conclusion: the way to avoid religious appropriation isn’t to borrow less; it’s to borrow more. \n\n\n\nThis lecture is part of the Big Questions series on social issues past and present. UCSIA developed this series for the Antwerp city festival Baroque Influencers. \n\n\n\nAfter the lecture\, writer and theologian Jonas Slaats and Indian lawyer Shilpi Pandey join us on the sofa for an engaging conversation on contemporary spirituality. \n\n\n\nAs a theologian and writer\, Jonas Slaats (Ghent\, 1980) always moves on the intersections of religion\, politics and mysticism. After his philosophical\, anthropological and theological studies\, he engaged in various forms of local and international peace work with a focus on human rights\, multiculturalism and interreligious dialogue. Professionally today\, he works as a teacher of philosophical subjects in higher education. In his latest book\, Religion Revisited\, he punctures the most persistent misconceptions about religion and with his podcast series\, Groetjes uit Shambhala\, he casts a critical eye on various facets of contemporary spirituality. \n\n\n\nShilpi Pandey\, a qualified Indian lawyer\, is currently a Doctoral researcher at the Faculty of Law and Criminology at VUB. Having worked in India\, she moved to Europe to pursue her academic ambitions and holds an Advanced master’s in international and European Law. Her research focuses on the intersection of religion\, gender\, and colonial knowledge production in the context of women’s rights. Shilpi has published her work in various journals and books\, with her most recent contribution titled “Brown Women Saving Brown Women – Setting New Narratives of an ‘Acceptable Voice'” published in the Journal of Critical Southern Studies. Being a researcher from India\, she possesses first-hand knowledge of the religious and cultural practices of Hinduism and is also an avid yoga practitioner. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLiz Bucar\n\n\n\n\n\nJonas Slaats\n\n\n\n\n\nShilpi Pandey

SUMMARY:Solidarity in the European Union
DESCRIPTION:In this lecture deputy prime minister and minister for social affairs and public health Frank Vandenbroucke will focus on three interrelated topics. \n\n\n\nFirst\, he will dwell on the relation between the European Union and the welfare state. While welfare state solidarity largely remains within the boundaries of nation-states\, the latter do not operate in a vacuum. As he will argue\, solidarity understood as income insurance and redistribution is of key importance in a multilevel perspective and in the development of what he calls a European Social Union. \n\n\n\nSecond\, minister Vandenbroucke will reflect on the lessons learned from the COVID-pandemic. COVID-19 not only made clear that an inclusive welfare state makes it easier to fight a pandemic\, it also showed that even well-organised national welfare states reach their limits in the face of such a transnational challenge. European solidarity was key to reinforce national response capacities. \n\n\n\nThird\, the minister will shed light on the EU social agenda beyond 2024 by highlighting the priorities Belgium will put forward when it holds the presidency of the Council of the EU in the first half of 2024. \n\n\n\nAfter the lecture Ms Kathleen Van Brempt\, Member of the European Parliament (S&D)\, and Mr Karel Lannoo\, CEO of CEPS (Centre for European Policy Studies)\, will reflect on minister Vandenbroucke’s presentation and go into dialogue with him. \n\n\n\nThe discussion will be moderated by Sarah Marchal\, professor of Social Policy at the Herman Deleeck Centre of the University of Antwerp. \n\n\n\nThis lecture is part of the Big Questions series on social issues past and present. SUMMARY:Microfinance: between Solidarity and gain
DESCRIPTION:Experts Piet Callens\, Loïc De Cannière\, Luc Haegemans\, Koen Schoors and Leen Van den Neste discuss the role of microfinance in a prosperous country like Belgium. \n\n\n\nMicrofinance is a system that allows poor families and small entrepreneurs in need of money to borrow small amounts at an advantageous interest rate. Something similar already existed in the 17th century: the so-called ‘Mountains of Mercy’. Lessius was an ardent defender of this institution because it prevented usury. \n\n\n\nToday\, microfinance is well established in low-income countries\, but it is also a channel for borrowing money in prosperous countries. \n\n\n\nThis debate (in Dutch) is part of our series on the big questions in society. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n More about the series ‘Big Questions’ …\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Big Questions for a World in Transition: A Dialogue between Tradition and Innovation\n \n Just like today\, the 17th century was a turbulent time. SUMMARY:Solidarity\, Immigration & Social Class
DESCRIPTION:Albanian author and political theorist Lea Ypi (London School of Economics) will talk about solidarity\, immigration and social class (in English). \n\n\n\nIn the 17th century\, migration as we know it never really was an issue. Today\, however\, it is a controversial topic. The growing skepticism is rooted in the idea that there is a trade-off between openness to immigration and support for the welfare state. So far the response to this argument has been to adapt the nation-state model of solidarity to the current political context. The two most prominent ways to do so are multicultural solidarity\, on the one hand\, and supranational solidarity\, on the other. \n\n\n\nLea Ypi will present us with a third model: class-based solidarity. Why is this the more attractive response to the dilemma? How does it relate to our understanding of political community today? And why is social class so important in building bonds of solidarity? \n\n\n\nThis is lecture is part of the series The Big Questions on the social issues then and now. Read more …

SUMMARY:Social struggles and solidarityWith Lessius in search of a balance between capital and labour
DESCRIPTION:In this historical lecture\, Professor of Legal History Wim Decock takes us back to the second half of the 19th century. Industrialisation caused an explosion of wealth and poverty. Inequality increased. Tensions rose between the workers and the big industrialists. In their search for spiritual answers to the social question\, the Jesuits find inspiration from none other than Leonardus Lessius\, one of the most influential Jesuits of the Baroque period. \n\n\n\nThis talk (in Dutch) is part of our lecture series on the grand questions in society. \n\n\n\nRead more about this event in Dutch. \n\n\n\nThis is lecture is part of the series The Big Questions on the social issues then and now. SUMMARY:The Sodality Rediscovered. New sources for a visual reconstruction of the upper sodality of the Antwerp Professenhuis.
DESCRIPTION:What is now the Henry Conscience Heritage Library’s Nottebohm Hall\, used to be an impressive Baroque chapel until 1773. After the dissolution of the Jesuit order\, the art treasures became scattered. The most important works of art\, including two works by Van Dyck and one by Rubens\, were purchased by Empress Maria-Theresia and are currently among the masterpieces of the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna. \n\n\n\nThorough research by Steven Van Impe and master’s student Marijke Drijbooms in recent years has brought to light new archival and iconographic sources so that we now know much more about the interior of the Upper Sodality. As part of the city festival “Baroque Influencers\,” there will be an exhibition in the Nottebohm Hall in which the interior of the Upper Sodality will be evoked. \n\n\n\n\n\nThe interior of the Baroque chapel of the Upper Sodality. \n\n\n\n\n\nThe Antwerp Historical Society invited Steven Van Impe to give a digital lecture (in Dutch) as a preview of the exhibition. Steven is curator at the Heritage Library Hendrik Conscience. \n\n\n\nThere is no need to register in advance for this webinar. The link will soon appear on the website of the Antwerp History Society.
