The Academy of Ancient Music (UK) will take us from Rome to Paraguay, following in the footsteps of Jesuit Domenico Zipoli (1688–1726), a priest, traveller and gifted composer. Zipoli began his career as a student of Alessandro Scarlatti in Rome and ended up in Latin America, where he composed in the Western European style.
Zipoli’s rich and expressive sacred music easily stands alongside the works that inspired him: music by Palestrina, Pasquini, Scarlatti and Gabrieli as well as the indigenous voices of South America itself. It is a lively perspective that provokes reflection on the wider world of the baroque tradition.
